ELLIS COUNTY (1080 KRLD) – Emergency responders are on the scene of an accident involving a school bus with several students onboard.

According to Ellis County officials, heavy rains caused the Ennis Independent School District bus to go off the road just east of Interstate-45, on Zmolek Road. The bus was headed to a school when it ended up in the ditch early Tuesday morning.

A total of seven children, the school bus driver and a bus monitor were on board. Two of the kids were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The five children who weren’t injured were picked up by their parents.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) spokesperson Lt. Lonny Haschel said it hasn’t been confirmed that weather played a role in the accident. “They’ll take a look at all the witness statements, the driver statement and compile a list of all these pieces, put all those things together before they make an actual determination — but it was raining at the time of the crash.”

No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
