HOUSTON (AP) — Students riding Houston school district buses equipped with three-point seat belts will be required to buckle up or face disciplinary action under a newly approved student conduct code revision.
Under the change approved Thursday by a unanimous Houston Independent School District board, students aboard buses equipped only with lap belts will be encouraged to fasten themselves.
Of the district’s 1,100 buses, just 430 have lap belts and 90 have three-point safety belts.
The district plans to replace 60 older buses this fall with vehicles equipped with three-point belts.
The new buses will be assigned to the longest routes carrying elementary school children.
