DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - A school bus driver, who suffered a heart attack and crashed into an apartment complex Tuesday afternoon, was 85 years old according Dallas County Schools.
An employee for 27 years, the woman had an ‘exemplary’ record, said the agency.
The family whose home she struck, though, questions whether she should have been behind the wheel.
“I don’t think you need to be employed driving children around,” said Lula Johnson, whose great grandchildren were buried in debris at the crash site.
The three-year-old boy, D’marion, and one-year-old girls, Jomerica and Destiny, were home with their mother, Britney Henderson, when the bus crashed through their kitchen wall.
“Boom. Stuff just went everywhere. I thought it was a bomb,” said Henderson.
Standing in the parking lot outside, their father saw it all.
“I was shocked. All I know is I was worrying about my kids,” said Raphael Fielding, who ran to help.
“I had to dig my kids up from under the clay or whatever it is and run on outside with them. It was scary,” said Henderson.
The children made it out with just few scratches and bruises.
“It was unbelievable. They lost everything,” said Johnson.
The family now wants to know who or what is responsible.
Dallas County Schools provides transportation for students in the Dallas Independent School District.
“At this time the investigation is still ongoing,” said DCS chief of staff Susan Falvo.
When asked about the age of the driver, Falvo responded the state sets the rules for bus drivers, and the agency follows them.
According to a website for the Texas Department of Public Safety, the state requires drivers to pass an annual physical, keep a safe driving record, and be certified in school bus safety every three years.
Drivers must be at least 18 years old, but there’s no limit on how old they can be.
