DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - An official with Dallas County Schools said Wednesday that the bus driver who crashed into an apartment complex in Dallas on Tuesday suffered a heart attack just before the incident. The vehicle was carrying the driver, a monitor and two young students when it smashed through a wall along Ledbetter Drive.
“Our concern is for the health of the driver,” said Susan Falvo with Dallas County Schools, the company that owns the bus. “Our hearts and prayers are with the driver.”
The bus first slammed through the apartment complex gate and into several cars before punching a hole into the side of the brick building, where a woman and three children were inside. Nobody else — either on the bus or inside of the building — was seriously injured during the crash, although a young girl was taken to the hospital to be checked out and a young boy was hospitalized complaining of back pain. Paramedics assisted the woman inside of the apartment building with a leg injury.
The bus driver was also transported to the hospital for treatment.
The Dallas Police Department and Dallas County Schools are now continuing to investigate the crash. “Even though the bus is new, we have taken it to an independent organization for mechanical inspection as part of our standard protocol,” explained Falvo. “We are very grateful that no students, employees or citizens sustained major injuries.”
