DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Dallas County Schools is cracking down on drivers who ignore those flashing stop signs on school buses. They have released video showing motorists zooming past students on the street.
The agency stated that, on average, 120 people illegally pass a school bus every day. They have also released a list of the area’s five most dangerous intersections for school buses, each located near a school campus.
— Northwest Highway & Skillman Street
— North Central Expressway & Spring Valley Road
— Boaz Street & Inwood Road
— Harry Hines Boulevard & Randall Street
— Bellcrest Drive & Persimmon Road
Video from those intersections is scary. Drivers repeatedly come close to striking children as they pay little attention to the flashing stop signs. That video comes from cameras that have been mounted on Dallas County Schools buses. Now, the agency is going to start using that footage to track more drivers.
State law requires cars on both sides of the street to stop when a school bus is loading or unloading students, if there is no barrier like a median. An enforcement program began back in 2012, and almost 27,000 citations have been handed out. But, since the mounted cameras still seem to make little difference, Dallas County Schools is hoping that fines will.
The company plans to track more of the cars that ignore the school bus stop signs, focusing on those five problem areas listed above. Each violation is $300.
Dallas County Schools provides buses to 11 area school districts, including the Dallas Independent School District.
